Article Types

Landbauforschung publishes Research articles, Review articles and Position papers. In Landbauforschung, 6,600 characters including space characters and punctuation constitute a printed page (text only).

Research articles present original new research results. The material should not have been previously published elsewhere. The novelty of results and their possible use in further development of sustain-able and organic agricultural systems should be clearly claimed (length up to ten pages incl. tables and figures, references are not included and limited to 60).

Review articles present new overviews generated from existing scientific literature to analyse the current state of knowledge. Conclusions on necessary consequences for further sustainable develop-ment of agricultural systems and research needs shall be drawn (length up to 20 pages incl. tables and figures, references are not included and unlimited).

Position papers present science-based opinions on new, or possibly disruptive, developments in sustainable agricultural systems. Authors should use scientific references to validate and approve arguments for a position. These papers shall allow the reader to understand controversial positions and to find an own position. Position papers should be limited to a maximum of 10,000 to 20,000 characters including space characters and punctuation (converted in English words: 1,600 to 3,200 words; length up to four pages text; figures, tables, photos and up to 40 references are additional).

Peer Review

All manuscripts will be reviewed in a double-blind process by at least two referees to ensure both accuracy and relevance. Their report will provide the basis for acceptance. Revision of authors may be required until final acceptation. Authors should kindly suggest the names and contact details (title, name, postal address, phone, e-mail address, web page) of at least three appropriate international reviewers. The suggested referees must have no conflict of interest with the authors: They should not be co-authors of previous publications co-signed by the authors within the last five years. Proposed reviewers should be from different institutions to the authors. The editor will not necessarily approach these referees as the ultimate selection of reviewers lies in the responsibility of the editor.

Arrangement of Research and Review papers

Please start your paper with: article title, name of authors with addresses (including e-mail addresses). The Authors should be named with first and last names as well as with their professional affiliation (university, institute, street, city, state). The text of research articles should contain the following sections:

  • Title
  • Authors
  • Highlights (200-300 characters, containing main findings and novel results written for a broad audience)
  • Abstract (1,500-1,600 characters)
  • List of keywords (3-10 keywords)
  • Introduction - Material and Methods
  • Results and Discussion
  • Conclusions

  • Description of problem
  • Possible solution

Manuscript presentation

Please submit your manuscript as a Word file (single column continuous text 1.5 spacing). Tables can be submitted in the text or separately as a Word file. Number every page, as well as every line, including the references, tables, etc. consecutively. The text outline is in accordance to the decimal system: 1 Introduction, 2 …, 2.1 …up to a maximum of three levels.

Mathematical Formulas and Symbols are to be created with the Formula editor in the text body.

Footnotes are to be avoided as far as possible. Should they nonetheless be necessary, they should be numbered sequentially and placed at the bottom of the appropriate page.

Artwork (Tables, photos and figures) Illustrations and tables are always to be submitted in an editable form. Mark the planned positioning of artwork clearly in your text.

Tables and illustrations should be oriented on the final column width (= 79.5 mm wide). The use of double column width (= 163 mm wide) is also possible. Please avoid using other formats!

Provide self-explanatory captions for figures and photos and headlines for tables.

Graphics should be provided as single original files in importable formats (ppt, xls, cdr, ai, eps, wfw). Use 7 point "Calibri" typeface. Since the graphics can be published in colour, but in the primary and secondary colors of the Thünen-Institute, the format must be editable. PDF-files must include high quality print options in the colour mode CMYK.

The tables are numbered sequentially in the text and each has a clear headline. Tables should be self-explanatory and understandable without excessive reference to the text. They should not be used if text or illustration give the same information. Tables must be prepared using the table feature in Microsoft Word. Tables prepared in other programs (e.g., Excel) or by using spaces, tabs, and hard returns will not convert accurately.

The figures are also numbered sequentially in the text and each has a caption. The text should refer to the tables and the figures.
